Job Description

Under the direction of the CSSD Head, the CSSD Technician processes reusable items through the decontamination, sorting, wrapping, sterilizing, distribution and storing procedures. Responsible for routine technical tasks in each work area of CSSD for production and delivery of safe instruments, supplies, and equipment for patient care delivery. Works flexibly and cooperatively while always following Riyadh National Hospital Policies and Procedures and reflecting the Mission, Vision and Objectives of the Nursing Department and Hospital.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Commitment to Hospital

  • Practice in a manner which is always client centered and fitting to an excellent Private Hospital, reinforcing the impression that the hospital regards the client (patient/family) as the focal recipient of excellent care, respect, friendly communication and professional behavior
  • Practice in a manner which promotes positive image of nursing and hospital to patients, family and visitors.
  • Take immediate action to resolve or clear any negative impression, complaint or distress expressed in any way by the patient or family

Job Competence

  • Collect or receive contaminated instruments and equipment from all hospital areas
  • Check all items received and log them in
  • Perform routine procedures in Decontamination Area, sort contaminated items and thoroughly clean routine surgical instruments and equipment following manufacturers’ instructions and established guidelines for effective bio-burden removal
  • Inspect instrumentation for surface corrosion and test for working condition
  • Assemble and package basic instrument sets and routine procedural trays using the Operating Manual and AAMI recommended packaging materials and techniques
  • Load and unload sterilizer chambers without damage to the integrity of packages, according to Operating Manual procedures and AAMI
  • Report any missing items, and where appropriate, assist in completing OVR report
  • Recommends to the CSSD Manager and Area Manager instrument that needs to be condemned and replaced.
  • Soft wrap and sterilize medical instruments and equipment
  • Check all sterilizers to ensure they are working correctly using Bowie-Dick and biological testing
  • Inspect and de-lint freshly laundered linen when received from the laundry service
  • Fold and assemble basic linen items
  • Transport single–use supplies and sterile items to patient treatment areas according toInfection Control Policy and Operating Manual procedures
  • Answer requests from OR
  • Receive and clean utility pans and basins from patient care areas
  • Assist in checking supply levels and delivery areas

  • Perform other duties as assigned by CSSD Manager and Area Manager

  • Work cooperatively as part of the multidisciplinary, multicultural team
  • Use only English or Arabic when outside the CSSD unit
  • Follow correct chain of command for requests or for conflict resolution

Management of Work

  • Understand procedures and required safety precautions prior to job performance
  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment for each job assignment
  • Use standard safety precautions when working with bio-hazardous materials, toxic chemicals, steam, gas, dry heat and plasma sterilization equipment
  • Check inventory on CSSD shelves, order supplies from bulk store & restock shelves
  • Inspect stored, sterile packaged products for stock rotation and event-related shelf life
  • Receive and record supplies, new equipment and instruments for processing
  • Monitor and replenish solutions in metered dispensing washers, ultrasonic units, and other automated cleaning equipment
  • Ensure that sterilizers and machines are functioning properly according to operating manual.

  • Support and uphold the philosophy, vision, mission and objectives of nursing department and hospital
  • Comply with the standards laid down by JCIA, ARAMCO and CBAHI and perform duties necessary to support and achieve accreditation
  • Know the Key Performance Indicators for the area and strive to improve them
  • Inform CSSD Manager or Area Manager of any complaints, incidents or accidents
  • Be aware of and follow all Riyadh National Hospital Policies and Procedures related to all tasks performed

Personal and Professional Development

  • Attend in-service and training classes as required
  • Assist with the orientation of new employees
  • Pass BCLS within first 6 months at RNH
  • Accept constructive criticism and be willing to learn
  • Maintain and improve practice by self study
  • Set and achieve personal objectives
  • Be responsible for on-going professional development through identifying own learning needs, seeking educational opportunities and utilizing available sources and opportunities to remain current in CSSD related topics

Patient and Family Education

  • Involves the patient/families in plan of care and respects patients/families regarding their goals and choices of patient care.
  • Provides health promotion and health teaching thru methods appropriate to a patients’ developmental level, learning needs, readiness and ability to learn, language preference, culture and situations.
  • Allots time necessary to assess, plan implement and evaluate patient education provided to patients/families with appropriate documentation.
  • Utilize the nursing process in creating and coordinating teaching plans for individualized patients.
  • Create patient care assignments as per competency regarding surgical procedures

  • Head of C.S.S.D.

Supervises:

  • No supervisory responsibilities

Qualifications:

A minimum of:

  • Certification in CSSD specialty from recognized organization
  • Two (2) years in C.S.S.D. in an acute care hospital
  • Minimum of four (4) years O.R. experience in an acute care hospital

Skills:

  • Fluency in verbal and written English.
  • Exhibits professional and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems.
  • Good command of medical terminology.
  • Ventilator management knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to work well with and within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Have critical thinking & problem solving skills
